SPORTS - Emergency Medical Responder Course Description: This evidence-informed, hybrid online and in-person course provides the necessary tools for the sports medicine professional to manage sideline trauma and medical emergencies. Sports Emergency Medical Responders possess the knowledge and confidence required to provide effective sideline lifesaving care while awaiting additional EMS resources to arrive.

Assessment: To successfully complete this course, students must pass both written and practical Red Cross assessments in both "BLS CPR for Health Care Provider" and "Emergency Medical Response" Students will also be expected to successfully complete (>80%) chapter quizzes based on required readings from the ARC Emergency Medical Response textbook. Knowledge, Skills and Assessment of Psychomotor Skills . Deep understanding of the latest NATA position statements.

Optional units: Glucometer, nebulization, Intravenous placement, and injection training.

Sports-EMR training enhances responder skills sets to increase the chance of survival for sports-specific emergency care interventions. This course meets and exceeds the requirements set forth by the National EMS Education Scope of Practice for an Emergency Medical Responder.

Purpose: This course is geared for sideline care providers to update their sideline care knowledge and skills. There have been significant changes to sideline care in terms of protocols and professional competency and expectations. This course is aimed at updating Athletic Trainer’s professional practice gaps in knowledge.

Cancellation and Refund Policy Course fees are 100% refundable if cancellation is received at least 30  days prior the event. There will be no refund for cancellations received within 30 days of the on-site course date. If participants register and do not complete LMS modules or do not attend on-site portion, they are still responsible for full course payment. Participants may choose to defer their registration for up to 1 year if they are unable to attend the on-site course and need to cancel within 30 days of the program offering.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course will  o Identify differences in EMS operations for various States. o Explain ethical and legal issues related to emergency management and outline approved steps o Describe standardized acute sideline care management o Describe updated, evidence-informed, professional level acute spine injury management o Describe emergency treatment for concussion injuries o Identify signs and symptoms relative to spinal cord injuries. o Recognize when it is appropriate to initiate equipment removal procedure o Describe equipment removal procedures on various types of athletes and situations o Explain various types of SMR/extrication/boarding procedures based on latest evidence o Discuss spinal cord injury prevention plans o Describe and implement emergency treatment for medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Expected Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the participant will: o Perform evidenced-informed emergency psychomotor skills o Demonstrate the ability to deliver high quality basic life support skills. o Demonstrate use of an automated external defibrillation (AED) in an emergency situation o Demonstrate procedures for rescue airway management and oxygen administration o Execute professional level primary and secondary surveys to be able to make informed decisions. o Explain and implement medical emergency management at the professional level for full age spectrum of athletes. o Demonstrate knowledge of concussion management steps o Explain and implement necessary steps to treat patient with exertional heat illness and other environmental-related emergencies. o Successfully treat medical conditions, including but not limited to; anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, and sickle-cell disease. o Execute emergent and non-emergent bleeding and wound management techniques o Demonstrate proper sports equipment management and removal o Perform various approaches to (SMR) Spinal Motion Restriction, boarding, scoop and extrication o Develop and implement plans to prevent disease transmission and proper use of PPE o Assess and manage athletes of all ages with a variety of complaints, medical conditions and traumatic injuries o Demonstrate the ability to lead critical care scenarios using a “pit crew” approach  o Performing a Primary care assessment: U-Glasgow/ AVPU o Perform advanced high-quality CPR, Airway Management and Ventilation o Sport specific Medical and Trauma Emergencies o EMS Operations o Pharmacological Intervention o Training in asthma, anaphylaxis, opioid overdose management o Training in epinephrine auto-injectors, naloxone o Spinal: Canadian C-Spine Rules, Nexus assessment/ SMR (Spinal Motion Restriction) o Sports specific spinal care guidelines o Equipment management and removal o C-collar application, spine-board, scoop stretcher techniques o Moves, lifts, transfers, practical simulations using various extrication devices o Equipment, tools, supplies, guidelines o AHA 2020, ITLS 2019, and PHTLS 2018 applications o Primary Assessment: U-Glasgow/ AVPU o UCABd, airway access, equipment extrication, SpO2 (application part of primary) o Sports-specific faceguard/ helmet removal/ spinal re-alignment o Obstructed airway techniques o Airway adjuncts: oral/naso-pharyngeal, Rescue Airways: LMA: I-Gel o Ventilation: pocket mask, bag-valve-mask (2-person) o Oxygenation: cylinder, regulator, masks, cannula o Suction: manual/mechanical o Secondary Assessment: DEFG, Sample/Head-Toe/Vital signs o Hemorrhage control: cap/venous/arterial, direct/digital pressure, tourniquet, packing o Wounds: care, dressing, bandaging, protection o Soft tissue management, musculoskeletal, amputation o Head trauma: Traumatic Brain Injury mild/severe o Facial/ ant. neck/ chest/ ribs/ viscera/ pelvis o Fracture management, alignment o Respiratory: asthma, COPD, hyperventilation o Medical: cardiac, CVA, seizures, diabetes o Shock: physiological/ electrical, Epi-Pen, o Burns: superficial, partial/ full thickness, scalds, electrical o Drowning/ submersion o Environmental: hyperthermia (TACO)/ hypothermia (BURRITO)/ frost nip/ frostbite o Multiple casualties, triage, exams o Femoral traction splint (Sager) o Protocols for specific medical conditions, including anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetic athlete, sickle-cell, environmental conditions, .
